Lawful Good

Characters who are of Lawful Good alignment believe in order and civility above all. The character is very chivalrous and lives strictly bound by codes of honor, order, or law. These characters will always act to uphold such order and law even when against their better judgment or even when faced with bringing justice to a friend or ally.

Such characters can be vastly different, but always tend to have similar themes. Protecting the innocent, not killing, stealing, etc, are just some of the very common codes which a Lawful Good character will tend to never, ever, break (note that not all Lawful Good characters adhere strictly to local law, but may adhere to their own personal codes, honor, etc). To a Lawful Good character, the law (whether it’s the law where they live or their own personal laws) overshadow any other obligations such as friendship or doing what, in their head, might seem like a better option.

Examples of Lawful Good characters include Iron Man, Nick Fury, and Captain America. Old d20 Alignments: Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral.

Good

Characters who are of a Good alignment believe in freedom and compassion. The character is one who helps out others out of their own personal codes or beliefs and is not burdened by strict laws or codes of honor like Lawful Good characters are. They believe in doing what’s right which sometimes clashes with local law or the codes of others.

Unlike a Lawful Good character, a Good character does not feel beholden by their own personal beliefs or codes, tending to instead follow their heart in order to do what’s right, even if it means stealing or going against the law. A common trait amongst Good characters is that they will still not harm an innocent and, in most cases, will try to save any innocent lives in danger if they are able to.

Examples of Good characters include Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Wolverine. Old d20 Alignments: Neutral Good, Chaotic Good.

Neutral

Characters who are of a Neutral alignment tend to not take a stand as Good or Evil. The character does not take a solid stand as to what is good or evil or may dance on the fine line between Good and Evil. Those who are heavily attuned with nature, bounty hunters, assassins, and guns for hire are just some examples of neutral characters and are usually reserved for characters that are considered “Anti-Heroes”.

In other words, Neutral characters tend to follow their instincts and personal goals. If the character is a bounty hunter or assassin they will have no problems killing anyone, so long as it’s in their best interest to do so. Note also that a Neutral character, although they may kill whomever they please, will not do so unless they have a good reason to and do not find sick pleasures in ending the lives of others (in other words, it’s just a job…a job they potentially enjoy and are good at).

Examples of Neutral characters include Deadpool, Punisher, and Venom (Eddie Brock). Old d20 Alignments: Neutral, Chaotic Neutral.

Evil

Characters who are of an Evil alignment believe in tyranny and hatred. The character cares little for the woes and problems of others and only cares about their own goals and problems. An evil character isn’t afraid to step on anyone to get what he or she wants. Often an Evil character will abide by certain codes or personal laws, some even attempting to obey the local laws when in the eyes of the public.

Extremists, gangsters/mobsters, and would-be conquerors all fall under the umbrella of the Evil alignment. Some may enjoy killing others, but most do not enjoy the act, rather they see killing as a means to an end, a nessicary action to achieve their goals.

Examples of Evil characters include Magneto, Doctor Doom, and The Kingpin. Old d20 Alignments: Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil.

Chaotic Evil

Characters who are of a Chaotic Evil alignment believe in entropy and destruction. They feel nothing for anyone and have no personal codes to keep themselves in check, completely at the mercy of their own whims and pleasures. Chaotic Evil characters care little about the value of life and tend to be extremely selfish and cruel. While they believe in a high quality of personal freedom they do not care about the personal freedoms or lives of others.

Most Chaotic Evil characters will either enjoy killing to a sadistic extent, enjoy the misery and suffering of others, or are simply indifferent or uncaring about the death and suffering of anyone else. Serial killers, monsters with little intelligence, and beings wishing to extinguish all life are just a few examples of a Chaotic Evil character.

Examples of Chaotic Evil characters are Carnage, Ultron, and Galactus. Old d20 Alignments: Chaotic Evil.
